Hosting & Domain Names

This article explains the basics of the Hosting and Domain Name aspects of making a website.

Your site has to be on a server that is running 24/7 so people can see it at any time. This is called Hosting. A web server is an unavoidable cost of having a website. We have connections who have agreed to host sites for us, starting at $50 a year. That's pretty cheap compared to advertising for a year in a newspaper. But maybe you already have your own website, you don't need a host, but you need the actual webpages.

We'll work with you to get your site working on your old hosting. You can have control of the content and updates and save money. If you don't have someone in your group that can manage and update your page, we charge a monthly fee for updating the page (if needed), or a yearly fee for hosting pages which are static (no updates, the same info all year long).

A domain is another defining part of a website. It's the "www.google.com" in Google. It's the thing that tells everyone your website's name. It can be frustrating. Only one specific domain name can exist at a time. You can't purchase www.google.com for your own site. Why does this matter? For example. many churches have similar names. New Life Church should be prepared to think of a specific domain name. Chances are www.NewLife.com, www.NewLife.org and www.NewLife.net are already taken. Businesses often have similar problems. We can work with you to narrow down available domains. Domains cost from $10-15 a year, in most cases, and will be renewed, like hosting, by the year only. If you already own your own domain, there is no charge.

If you want to check on your own, go to Our Domain Registrar and type in a few names and see what's available. Simply typing a name in a search engine is not totally accurate. Domain Suffixes you can choose from include: .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .us, .me, and .tv.
